Another critical factor in network security is in OS update and patch management. Without having your systems consistently updated, you are at risk of exposing your network to the wide range of risks and security vulnerabilities. Microsoft's Windows Update service is a useful tool to ensure that all primary software remains up to date. However, in a large network, it becomes a daunting task to ensure that this occurs on a workstation by workstation basis. This is why Microsoft has released the centralized update management tool named WSUS (Windows Server Update Services).

Microsoft® Windows Server® Update Services 3.0 (WSUS 3.0) enables information technology administrators to deploy the latest Microsoft product updates to computers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows® XP with Service Pack 2, and Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 operating systems. By using WSUS, administrators can fully manage the distribution of updates that are released through Microsoft Update to computers in their network.
